Amiga, as the weather starts to cool down, many of us reach for an extra layer to wear, but we don’t always think about how this change can affect our hair and skin, too.
I spent years trying to figure out why my shampoo always caused my scalp to feel dry and irritated as soon as the cold weather arrived, but it never occurred to me how the culprit of seasonal shifts was my scalp. Our scalp is an extension of your skin, and just like your body needs extra lotion this time of year, your hair ritual may need adjusting to keep things balanced and hydrated.
How Weather Affects Our Hair & Skin
Our scalp consists of five layers that work together to provide protection, support, and mobility for the scalp and its contents, including blood vessels, nerves, and hair follicles. Whenever the seasons shift, our hair and skin do their best to keep up. However, constantly moving between the cold outdoor air and heated indoor spaces makes it harder for our scalp to keep up and stay balanced and hydrated. For many of us, this can lead to itchiness or dryness. Typically, our hands, face, and feet always feel it first, as they’re the parts of us that are typically most exposed, but this also includes your scalp when exposed to cold weather.
How I Transition My Haircare Ritual
During this transition, I do my best to protect my scalp from extreme changes, by wearing protective clothing like hats that help keep temperatures warm and by switching up my bars to ones that have humectants to help attract moisture from the environment into the scalp. One example is looking for products with ingredients like Vegetable glycerin, D-Panthenol, and Hemp Protein that are excellent ingredients that attract moisture (water) into your scalp, reducing dryness. Some bars that incorporate these powerhouses include:
🍊 Clementine Shampoo → A gentle cleanse for curls that keeps moisture in.
🌙 Nova Shampoo → Soothing, hydrating, and my go-to when the air dries out.
As someone with very oily hair, I spend most of the year reaching for Helix (my oily scalp bestie ✋), but as the cooler weather sneaks in, I swap Helix for Nova for hydration and balance. Another tip I swear by in the winter, is bringing conditioner closer to your scalp, it makes all the difference.
If you’ve been curious about making the switch to solid bars, this is your sign. Try the ritual that changed my hair.

A Fall Favorite I Make Just for You
Every fall, I love creating a small-batch lotion bar to keep our hands, feet, and skin happy through the cooler months. This bar is infused with one of my favorite herbs—Queen Anne’s Lace (Daucus carota).
This plant has been celebrated since ancient times, and for good reason. It’s known to help soothe the skin and support repair from small cuts, abrasions, and inflammation. For me, it feels like the perfect companion when the weather gets cooler and my skin starts to feel a little extra sensitive and dry.
Extra insight for you, amiga: Queen Anne’s Lace can even be enjoyed as a tea for immune support during seasonal changes. But just a quick note: this herb has historically been used as a natural contraceptive, so if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, it’s always best to check with a healthcare professional before using it.
