FAQs
About Sudz Cauldron
What is Sudz Cauldrons philosophy?
Sudz Cauldron exists to help women reconnect with their natural hair as an act of wellness, not correction.
We believe haircare is not separate from health, culture, or the environment, it is deeply intertwined with all three. Our approach honors the women who came before us, the science available to us now, and the responsibility we hold to those who come next.
What does Sudz Cauldron Mean?
Sudz Cauldron represents the thoughtful formulations we create, when ancestral wisdom and modern science come together to create something meaningful.
A cauldron is a vessel of transformation, where elements come together to create remedies using knowledge passed down. Meanwhile, Sudz speaks to the lather, and the everyday act of washing your hair. It’s the moment you’re present with yourself, engaging in a simple routine that supports your well-being.
Where is Sudz Cauldron made?
Sudz Cauldron products are handmade in Winter Haven, Florida using globally sourced ingredients. Balancing nature, performance, and sustainability to create products that truly care for both your hair and the planet.
We partner with suppliers who prioritize fair trade, certified organic standards, and conscious, science-backed practices to ensure exceptional quality and sustainability.
Is Sudz Cauldron Clean?
We believe “clean” should mean intentional, transparent, and grounded in both science and care, not just a marketing label.
Our formulas are thoughtfully created without ingredients like sulfates, phthalates, and parabens. We focus on keeping our ingredient lists purposeful.

Is Sudz Cauldron vegan?
Yes, Sudz Cauldron all products are formulated without any animal-derived ingredients.
OUR PRODUCTS
What is a shampoo bar?
It’s just like your traditional liquid shampoo, just in a concentrated bar. No plastic waste or excess water.
Our bars are soap free (made without lye). Instead we use gentle plant based surfactants (the molecules that create a cleansing sudz), combined with nutrient-rich ingredients to nourish your scalp and hair.
What is a conditioner bar?
A conditioner bar is a solid alternative to traditional liquid conditioners.
This concentrated bar is packed with plant-based conditioning agents, oils, butters, and nutrients to deeply hydrate, detangle, and soften your ends without the plastic bottle, silicones, or excess water.
How do I use a shampoo bar?
Wet your hair and the bar thoroughly. Gently glide the bar over your scalp or lather it between your hands, then massage into the scalp with your fingertips. Rinse well and let the lather cleanse the lengths as it washes out.
Curl tip: Focus on the scalp. Your curls don’t need aggressive cleansing, gentle, intentional washing goes a long way.
How much product should I use?
Less than you think. Our bars are concentrated, so a few glides across your scalp and hair should do. A small amount of lather is enough for most hair types.
First Time Bar User Tips:
- For first time use: activate your bar by rubbing it between your hands under the water in the shower.
- Do apply the bar to drenched hair. This helps further "awaken the bar," and helps it apply easily.
- For Shampoo: 1-4 swipes is usually all you need to cover your full scalp. Focus on your scalp.
- For Conditioner: Glide the conditioner bar across your hair from tip to root, focusing on your ends.
- For Conditioner: If your scalp leans more on the dry side, do apply a bit on your scalp. See how your hair likes it.
Do shampoo bars lather?
Yes. Our formulas are made with gentle, coconut-derived surfactants that create a rich, creamy lather without stripping your hair or scalp.
If you’re new to bars, make sure both your hair and the bar are fully wet—this makes a big difference.
Are these bars safe for daily use?
Yes, these bars are safe for daily use. How often you wash washing ultimately depends on your lifestyle. There isn't one "perfect" wash schedule.
The best routine is one that supports your curls, your scalp, and your lifestyle. Listen to your hair, it will tell you what it needs.
Do Sudz Cauldron Products Expire?
Like all personal care products made with real, functional ingredients, Sudz Cauldron products are designed to be used within a specific timeframe to ensure the best performance and experience.
Each product is stability tested for safety and quality. Unopened, our bars generally have a shelf life of up to 12 months. Once opened, we recommend using them within 6 months for optimal freshness, performance, and sensory experience.
You may notice a Period After Opening (PAO) symbol on sg (for example, “6M” or “12M”), which indicates how long the product remains at its beselect packagint after first use.
Why our products don’t “last forever”
We intentionally do not use harsh or heavy preservatives that are designed to extend shelf life indefinitely. Instead, we formulate with safe, thoughtfully selected preservatives and naturally functional ingredients that support scalp and hair health without unnecessary chemical load.
This approach allows us to:
- Protect product integrity and safety
- Support sensitive scalps and curls
- Stay aligned with our non-toxic, ingredient-forward philosophy
Shorter shelf life isn’t a flaw, it’s a reflection of fresh formulation and responsible preservation.
How to Get the Most Out of my bars
To help your bars stay fresh and effective:
- Store in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight
- Allow bars to fully dry between uses (a draining soap dish works best)
- Avoid storing in standing water or sealed containers while wet
- Use clean hands and keep bars separate from heavy buildup products
With proper care, your Sudz bars will deliver consistent performance from first wash to last.

TRANSITION & ADJUSTMENT
Do shampoo bars cause a “transition phase”?
No, most people do not experience a transition phase with our bars.
If your curls ever feel weighed down, dull, or not quite like themselves, it’s usually due to existing product buildup, not the bar itself. We recommend starting your curl health routine with our Helix Shampoo, it resets your curls to their natural state, removing product buildup from silicones and styling products.
Many conventional shampoos and styling products contain silicones, which are film-forming ingredients that coat your cuticles over time. It creates a film barrier that basically prevents anything from penetrating your hair. Helix will help break through.
How do I know if I have buildup?
You may have buildup if your curls:
- feel heavy or coated, even after washing
- lack definition or bounce
- feel dry but look shiny
- don’t respond to products the way they used to
This is especially common for curls that have been using silicone-based products for years.
What should I do if I think I have buildup?
We recommend starting with Helix, our clarifying shampoo bar.
Helix is designed to:
- gently remove silicone and product buildup
- restore curls closer to their natural state
- create a clean foundation before starting or returning to Clementine
Think of Helix as a reset, not something you need often, just when your curls are asking for a fresh start.
When should I use Helix vs. Clementine for my curls?
- Use Helix if your curls feel coated, weighed down, or unresponsive
- Use Clementine for ongoing curl care, moisture, and balance once buildup is cleared
Many customers start with Helix once, then continue with Clementine as their regular shampoo.
How often should I clarify?
Most curls only need to clarify occasionally, anywhere from once every few weeks to once every few months, depending on product use, water quality, and lifestyle.
Clarifying too often may not be necessary. Listen to your curls, they’ll let you know when it’s time.
When it’s time, we recommend using our Helix Shampoo Bar, a lightweight clarifying bar that helps remove buildup without stripping your curls.
My curls feel different, is that normal?
Curls can change with hormones, seasons, stress, and life. Feeling “different” doesn’t mean something is wrong.
Hair care isn’t about forcing consistency, it’s about choosing care that adapts with you.
If you’re unsure what your curls need right now, we’re always here to help.
What should I use for high-porosity hair?
High-Porosity Hair (needs moisture + gentle cleansing)
High-porosity hair absorbs water quickly but loses it just as fast. We recommend richer, more moisturizing bars that help nourish and support curl definition without buildup.
- Clementine Curl Shampoo – a moisturizing, sulfate-free cleanse made for curls
- Nova Shampoo Bar – ideal for dry or thirsty hair
- Haven Conditioner Bar – deeply nourishing for curls that need extra moisture
Tip: Follow with a leave-in or seal moisture while hair is damp for best results.
What should I use for low-porosity hair?
Low-Porosity Hair (prefers lightweight care)
Low-porosity hair benefits from lighter formulas that cleanse and condition without weighing curls down.
- Helix Shampoo Bar – lightweight and balancing
- Ember Conditioner Bar – smooths and softens without heavy buildup
Tip: Apply conditioner lightly, focusing on the ends, and gently press it into the hair rather than over-applying. Warm water and steam can also help products absorb more easily.
INGREDIENTS & WELLNESS
What does “non-toxic” mean to Sudz Cauldron?
Non-toxic means intentional formulation.
We avoid ingredients linked in studies to hormone disruption and reproductive harm, including phenoxyethanol, not just ingredients that may irritate some people. Our focus is long-term hair and scalp wellness. We don’t use fear-based language or make universal claims. Sensitivity varies, and care should remain flexible.
Why do you use hemp protein in your formulas?
Hemp protein is an ancestral plant, once used by my abuela as medicine to heal her aching knees. Today, it's been refined through modern formulation for visibly healthier curls.
We use hemp protein because it is a nutrient-rich, regenerative plant that helps curls retain moisture, stay soft, it supports curl strength, elasticity, and resilience, especially as hair becomes more fragile with age, environmental stressors, or hormonal shifts.
Are your products safe for sensitive scalps?
Our formulas are designed to be gentle enough for sensitive scalp, but every scalp can react differently to different ingredients. We always recommend reviewing the ingredient list and patch testing when possible. If you have known sensitivities to any of the ingredients on our bars, it might be best to avoid it altogether or seek professional advice from a healthcare provider.
We intentionally formulate different bars for different hair needs, hair patterns, and scalp concerns, so you can choose what works best for your curls, your scalp, and your daily ritual. We understand that not all natural ingredients are work for everyone.
Our role isn’t to tell you what your hair should be. It’s to give you options rooted in transparency, performance, and care so you get to decide.
Can pregnant women use Sudz Cauldron?
Though nothing in our formula has been identified as unsafe for pregnant or breastfeeding persons, we recommend sharing our ingredient list with your healthcare providers for review before usage.
Why did Sudz Cauldron choose fair trade cocoa butter?
We chose fair trade cocoa butter because it aligns with our belief that ingredient integrity includes human impact. By sourcing fair trade, we help support:
- Fair compensation for farmers
- Community development initiatives
- More sustainable farming practices
It’s a way to honor both ancestral ingredients and modern responsibility.
How does cocoa butter benefit curls and hair health?
Cocoa butter is deeply nourishing yet balanced, making it ideal for curls. In our formulas, it helps:
- Lock in moisture
- Support softness and elasticity
- Reduce dryness without heavy buildup
It’s an ingredient long cherished in many Latin households, now used intentionally in our curl rituals.
What is phenoxyethanol?
Phenoxyethanol is a synthetic preservative commonly used in personal care products, including many labeled as “clean,” to prevent microbial growth and extend shelf life.
Why does Sudz Cauldron NOT use phenoxyethanol? Isn't it a clean preservative?
We choose not to use phenoxyethanol because it has been linked in some research to endocrine-related concerns, particularly around hormone disruption.
Studies consider it to be safe when used in formulations at 1% , however, I prefer to formulate without it because continued exposure to this ingredient over time compounds. If every "clean brand" in your bathroom has this ingredient, your body is no longer being exposed to it at the safe percentage.
P.S. I always recommend you do your own research, not just take a random strangers advice on the internet. This is how you take control of what you put on your body amiga. Knowledge is power.
STORAGE, CARE, & TRAVEL
How should I store my bars?
Allow your bar to dry completely between uses. Store it on a well-draining dish, rack, or soap saver bag to extend its life.
Avoid leaving bars in standing water.
How long does one bar last?
With proper storage, a Full Size Bar (90g) Lasting ~60–70 washes. This is equivalent to approximately 2–3 bottles of salon quality liquid conditioner, depending on hair length and frequency of use.
A Fun Size Bar (30g) Lasts ~20–25 washes. Perfect for travel, gym bags, or sampling a formula before committing to full size.
Are shampoo bars good for travel?
Yes, especially if you want to travel lightly.
Bars:
- won’t spill
- aren’t subject to TSA liquid limits
- take up less space
- are easy to pack once fully dry
Let the bar dry before storing it in a breathable pouch or container.
How do I travel with my shampoo bar?
We recommend letting your bar dry fully before packing when possible. For on-the-go use, our bar saver bag and travel case are designed to make traveling with bars easy and mess-free.
The bar saver bag:
- has built-in loops so you can hang it in the shower or on a hook
- is designed for 360° airflow, allowing your bar to dry evenly
- helps keep your bar fresh between uses
The travel case:
- fits a full-size bar alongside the bar saver bag
- keeps your bar protected while traveling
- works seamlessly with the bar saver bag once the bar is dry
FYI for my last-minute packing amigas: After showering, your bar will typically air dry in the bar saver bag within about 3 hours. Once dry, simply place it back in your travel case, no shelf needed.
Do I need a special container to travel with bars?
Not necessarily, but having a breathable system makes a big difference.
Airtight containers can trap moisture and shorten the life of your bar. Our bar accessories are designed to protect your bars and allow them to dry properly, even while you’re on the move.
Can I use the bar saver bag at home too?
Yes. Many customers use the bar bag at home between washes. The hanging loops make it easy to grip your bars and keeps your bar off wet surfaces to extend its life.
You can lather your bar directly through the mesh onto your scalp. It provides a gentle exfoliation that won't tangle or tug on your hair.
SUSTAINABILITY & PACKAGING
Are your products plastic-free?
Yes. Our packaging is designed to minimize plastic waste and prioritize materials that can be recycled or composted where facilities exist.
You can learn more about packaging disposal on our Packaging & Sustainability page.
What kind of packaging does Sudz Cauldron Use?
We approach packaging the same way we approach formulation: intentionally, transparently, and with respect for the ecosystems that sustain us. Our goal isn’t perfection, it’s progress rooted in responsibility.
Reduce
Our first commitment is to eliminate plastic wherever possible. That’s why our full-size shampoo and conditioner bars are packaged in materials made from cotton and recycled fibers, completely free from plastic coatings, laminates, or glossy finishes. By avoiding plastic-lined paper, we prevent microplastics from entering soil and waterways once packaging is discarded.
Our solid bars also reduce the need for bulky bottles, excess shipping materials, and unnecessary fillers, less material overall, less waste at every step.
Reuse
Whenever recycled materials are available and safe to use, we choose them. The cotton and recycled fibers used in our packaging give existing materials a second life, helping reduce demand for virgin resources and minimizing environmental extraction.
Compost (and Recycle Where Needed)
Our mini bars are packaged in kraft paper heat-seal bags with a PLA (plant-based) lining, designed to provide moisture protection while remaining rooted in renewable, plant-derived materials.
How to Dispose:
- Remove any labels or stickers, if applicable
- Compost in a commercial composting facility where PLA-lined materials are accepted
- If commercial composting isn’t available, check with your local waste provider for best disposal options
We intentionally avoid “wish-cycling” claims and provide guidance based on real-world infrastructure.
Where are Sudz Cauldron Ingredients Sourced?
We source our ingredients from trusted, values-aligned suppliers around the world to ensure the highest standards of quality, safety, and efficacy. Each ingredient is intentionally selected not only for its proven performance in hair and scalp health, but also for how it is grown, harvested, and handled.
We work with suppliers who prioritize:
- Fair trade and ethical labor practices
- Responsible land stewardship
- Traceability and transparency across the supply chain
Whenever possible, we choose ingredients that support small farmers and farming communities, recognizing that wellness does not stop at the finished product, it begins at the source.
Every ingredient undergoes rigorous testing to meet our formulation, safety, and performance standards, because we believe caring for your hair should never come at the expense of people or the planet.
What does “fair trade cocoa butter” mean?
Fair trade cocoa butter comes from cocoa beans grown by farmers who are paid fair wages and work under ethical labor conditions. Fair trade standards also support safer working environments, environmental responsibility, and community investment in farming regions.
Where is your cocoa butter sourced from?
Our cocoa butter is sourced from fair trade cocoa farmers in Peru, where cocoa has been cultivated for generations. This partner is possible thanks to Fair Trade USA.
Founded in 1998, Fair Trade USA is the leading 501(c) (3) nonprofit, third party certifier of Fair Trade products in North America, that addresses issues of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion that farmers face worldwide. They ensure all workers enjoy safe working conditions and a living wage.
This initiative ensures that your haircare products receive high-quality cocoa, while supporting small-scale farming communities.
Is fair trade cocoa butter better for the environment?
Fair Trade USA's farming standards encourage responsible land use, reduced reliance on harmful agricultural practices, and long-term sustainability for farming regions. While no system is perfect, fair trade is one meaningful step toward a more ethical and regenerative supply chain.
